Wisconsin Watercolor Way: Week of February 16, 1998

We've been having warm weather in Wisconsin this winter--possibly aresult of El Nino. I've been able to spent quite a bit of time working onmy land because we have had above freezing weather and not much snow thismonth. Instead the days have been gray and rainy.

Part of my land is a reclamation project. For years it was used as ametal salvage yard and the soil was very poor and full of metal pieces.I was able to have over 2000 yards of dirt hauled onto it and now that part--roughlyan acre--is under two to four feet of dirt. The dirt is clean but it isa clay type fill. So I have the task of improving the soil and plantingit. As a first step last fall many truckloads of leaves from the city weredumped there and semi spread. In my spare time I've been forking the leavesout more evenly--until about 1/2 acre is now under a brown blanket. Thatis why I've been so happy to have the weather we have had.

The remaining 1/2 acre has yet to be graded and have some piles of topsoilput back. When that part is ready this spring I hope to begin to plant prairieplants. Since January I've been taking a Master Gardener class. The classhas helped me with some of the resources I need to learn about all this--andI've met "kindred spirits."

To me this part of my land is like a blank piece of paper--and now insteadof creating a painting on paper I'll be trying to create a picture on land.
